The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
