At least thirteen people lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” declared the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in complete accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
